NATIONAL SCIENCE MONTH-Harnessing the Unknown: Powering the Future through Science and Innovation

National Science Month is a month-long celebration held annually in the Philippines during September, in accordance with Presidential Proclamation No. 264 (s.2002). The celebration aims to foster interest in science, raise awareness of its impact on society, and encourage the use of science to solve global and local challenges. The theme for this year is, “Harnessing the unknown: Powering the future through science and innovation”.

The theme "Harnessing the Unknown: Powering the Future through Science and Innovation" for the 2025 National Science Month celebration highlights the critical role of science and innovation in addressing future challenges and creating new possibilities, emphasizing an active, exploratory approach to scientific discovery to drive progress.

Science has a tense relationship with society. As academic research is largely publicly funded, it is under constant pressure to justify its achievements to society (Kaldeway 2013, Weingart 2001). However, this narrative is not only viewed critically, but is sometimes even pushed by science managers, with the risk of weakening the autonomy of science, which in turn is the basis for high-quality findings and innovations.

In the coming decades, the relationship between science and society will become even more independent, requiring scientific literacy for the public and scientists to understand socieltal needs. This dynamic will be crucial for addressing major global challenges like climate change and public health crises, with science driving solutions while social, ethical, and political factors shape scientific priorities and acceptance of findings. The UN's declaration of the International Decade of Sciences for Sustainable Development highlights this critical connection as societies strive for more sustainable and equitable futures
